Heintzichthys is anextinctmonospecificgenus ofarthrodireplacoderm that lived what is nowEurope andNorth America during theFamennian stage of theLate Devonian period. Thetype specimen was discovered in theCleveland Shale nearCleveland,Ohio, in the United States.[1]
Heintzichthys is a member of thefamilySelenosteidae of thecladeAspinothoracidi, which belongs to the cladePachyosteomorphi, one of the two major clades withinEubrachythoraci. Thecladogram below shows thephylogeny ofHeintzichthys:[2]
According to a 2022 Jobbinset al. study,Heintzichthys was found to be a sister taxa toGorgonichthys.[3]
