Havsa (Greek:Νίκη) is a town inEdirne Province ofTurkey. It is the seat ofHavsa District.[2] Its population is 8,702 (2022).[1] The mayor is Huseyin Özden (CHP).
Havsa was founded asNike by Greek colonists. When the empire split into two, the city came under theByzantine Empire. In 1362, the land was captured byTurks under the leadership ofMurat I and the area was namedHosa. AfterEdirne became the center of theOttoman Empire, theRûm population inHosa abandoned the city and moved toIstanbul andThessaloniki. After the capture ofConstantinople, Turks fromAnatolia moved in, making the town Turkish.
The town is 21 kilometers away fromEdirne, and 218 kilometers fromIstanbul.
The town was calledHosa by the Turks in 1331. AfterHafsa Hatun moved to the town, it was calledHafsa. Later, the two names were combined to form the current nameHavsa.
