TheHasanids (Arabic:بنو حسن,romanized: Banū Ḥasan orحسنيون,Ḥasaniyyūn) are the descendants ofHasan ibn Ali, the grandson of theIslamic prophetMuhammad. They are a branch of theAlids (the descendants ofAli ibn Abi Talib), and one of the two most important branches of theashrāf (the other being the descendants of Hasan's brother Husayn, theHusaynids).[1]
Unlike the Husaynids, who accommodated themselves with theAbbasids, the Hasanids insisted on challenging the Abbasids' right to lead the Muslim world, launching unsuccessful revolts in762 and786.[2] after the suppression of the latter, a Hasanid branch, theIdrisids, settled in northernMorocco.[3]
In Morocco, the termHasani is particularly applied to the descendants ofMuhammad al-Nafs al-Zakiyya, to distinguish them from the Idrisids. The Moroccan Hasanids proper have produced two dynasties, theSaadi dynasty and theAlawite dynasty, which still reign over the country.[1]
