Harikela (Bengali:হরিকেল) was an ancient kingdom located in theBengal region of theIndian subcontinent. Originally, it was an independent township of ancient eastern Bengal,[1] which had a continuous existence of about 500 years.[2] The state of Harikal consisted of present-daySylhet andChittagong divisions ofBangladesh, as well as parts of theTripura state ofIndia.[3]
Two seventh century Chinese travellers mention a kingdom of Harikela.[4] The kingdom was ruled by theChandra dynasty during the 10th century CE. They were overthrown by theVarman Dynasty of Southeast Bengal, who were in turn overthrown by theDeva dynasty.
For a time its capital was nearChittagong before being moved toMunshiganj by the Candras.[5] Arab traders recognised Harikela (known as Harkand in Arabic) as the coastal regions ofBengal (near Chittagong) in the early period and includedSylhet[6] in the later period reaching as far as the ancientSundarbans.[7]
