Hardgate has probably been settled sinceNeolithic times with a burial site at Knappers Farm, theCochno Stone (acup and ring marked stone), and aburial chamber nearCochno Loch providing evidence of this.[1]
Although it is a far older settlement, it is administratively part of nearbyClydebank along with the neighbouring village ofDuntocher and now lies in theWest Dunbartonshire local authority area. Along with Duntocher andFaifley, Hardgate falls within West Dunbartonshiire'sKilpatrick ward with a combined population of 12,719 in 2011.[2]

The village expanded due to house building by theClydebank town council afterWorld War II, and later by theWimpey firm in the early 1970s on what had beengreen belt land.
