Indian singer and politician (born 1962)
Hans Raj Hans (born 9 April 1962) is an Indian singer and politician. He is a member of theBharatiya Janata Party and a recipient of the civilian honour ofPadma Shri .[ 1] He singsPunjabi folk andSufi music as well as in movies and has also released his own 'Punjabi-pop' albums. He has worked alongside other artists, such asNusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the movieKachche Dhaage .[ 2]
Hans Raj Hans was born in aMazhabi [ 3] Sikh (Dalit ) family the village of Shafipur, near toJalandhar ,[ 4] Punjab, India.[ 5] Hans graduated from DAV College, Jalandhar.[ 6] In his teen years, Hans was trained in singing by Ustad Puran Shah Koti.[ 7] In 2014, it was reported that Hans Raj converted toIslam , however he has denied this claim.[ 8] [ 9] [ 10]
Punjabi gayki seminar In his youth, Hans learned from music director Charanjit Ahuja. Then he started singingPunjabi folk, devotional, and Sufi music.[ 11] He worked with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the movieKachche Dhaage .[ 12]
Hans has been an honorary music professor at Washington DC University and San Jose State University.[ 13]
Hans joinedShiromani Akali Dal in January 2009 and in May of that year, he contested unsuccessfully fromJalandhar Lok Sabha constituency .[ 14] Later he resigned fromShiromani Akali Dal on 18 December 2014.[ 15] In February 2016, he joinedIndian National Congress [ 16] and later in December 2016, he joinedBharatiya Janata Party .[ 17] In2019 Indian general election , he was elected from theNorth West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency .[ 18] In2024 Indian general election , he unsuccessfully contested fromFaridkot Lok Sabha constituency and stood at fifth position.[ 19] [ 20]
