Early years and PSV

[edit]

Born inHelmond,North Brabant, Gillhaus started playing professionally forFC Den Bosch, making hisEredivisie debuts in1983–84 (12 games, three goals), then proceeding to score 33 league goals in his last two seasons combined.

In the 1987 summer,A.C. Milan boughtRuud Gullit fromPSV Eindhoven for a world-record transfer fee£6,000,000, and that money was soon used in the acquisition of Gillhaus,Wim Kieft andSøren Lerby. The former netted 15 goals in only 26 games inhis first season, helping thePhilips club to a historictreble – he appeared 105 minutes inthe campaign'sEuropean Cupfinal, a 0–0penalty shootout win againstS.L. Benfica.[1]

Aberdeen

[edit]

With the arrival of BrazilianRomário, Gillhaus found himself relegated to asubstitute role at PSV. In November 1989, he signed withAberdeen for £650,000 (3,000,000 in today's money), made an immediate impact on his debut, scoring two goals (including an overhead kick) againstDunfermline Athletic in a 3–0 win atEast End Park; this was followed in the next fixture by the game's only goal againstRangers, netting through a left-foot curling shot into the top corner atPittodrie.[2]

While with Aberdeen, Gillhaus collected aScottish Cup winners medal in1989–90, scoring twiceen route to the final againstCeltic and starting indecisive match, another penalty shootout triumph.

Late career

[edit]

Gillhaus left Aberdeen in early March 1993 after falling out of favour with managerWillie Miller, moving toVitesse Arnhem for £300,000.[3] He scored a career-best 22 goals inhis first full season, as they finished fourth andqualified to theUEFA Cup.

Aged 31, Gillhaus moved abroad again, signing forGamba Osaka in the JapaneseJ-League. In 1998, he played in Finland withFF Jaro, and retired at the end ofthe following season at nearly 36 after helping first club Den Bosch return to the top flight.

International career

[edit]

Gillhaus made his debut forNetherlands on 28 October 1987, in aUEFA Euro 1988qualifier againstCyprus inRotterdam (8–0 win), a game marred by the"bomb incident". In the same competition, on 16 December, he scored his only two goals for the national team in a 3–0 away win againstGreece, but was not selected for the squad that competed in the final stages in Germany, eventually winning the tournament.[4]

Gillhaus was picked by managerLeo Beenhakker for the1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, appearing in three games (two starts) in an eventualround-of-16 exit.[5]
