Halbakko (Arabic:حلبكو; also transliteratedHelbakko) is a village in northwesternSyria, administratively part of theJableh District inLatakia Governorate. According to theSyria Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), Halbakko had a population of 292 in the 2004 census.[1] Its inhabitants areAlawites. The village was originally founded by the residents of nearbyBeit Yashout as a forested outpost on the hill above their village. It has an elevation of 1,000 meters (3,300 ft) above sea level. It was among the Alawite villages that revolted or resistedOttoman authority in the period immediately following theOttoman conquest of Syria in 1517.[2] By 1547, the village was recorded to have paid 300dirhems orpiasters and its inhabitants were classified as part of the AlawiteKalbiyya tribal confederation.[3]
