HMSFlying Fox is aRoyal Naval Reserve unit located inBristol,England. Training over 100 reservists on Thursday evenings in Bristol,Flying Fox servesBristol,Dorset,Devon,Somerset,Wiltshire andGloucestershire.

History

Bristol Division was one of the five divisions of theRoyal Naval Volunteer Reserve formed in 1903. After theFirst World War the division was reformed and a new drill ship, the24-classsloopHMS Flying Fox, was berthed at Bristol in 1924. Renamed Severn Division after theSecond World War, HMSFlying Fox moved ashore to its present HQ in 1972. The ship itself was towed down theRiver Avon and across theBristol Channel to aship breaker's yard inCardiff in 1973.[2]

In July 2023, the headquarters of theRoyal Marines Reserve moved out ofDorset House so as to co-locate with theRoyal Naval Reserve at HMSFlying Fox in Winterstoke Road.[3]

Based units

Co-located on the site in Winterstoke Road are the Naval Regional Officer for Wales and West of England,[4] the University Royal Naval Unit (URNU) Bristol, the South West Area Sea Cadet HQ,[5] Winterstoke Detachment of Bristol Army Cadet Force,[6] and the regional headquarters of the Royal Marines Reserve.[3]
