HD 43197 b is anextrasolar planet which orbits theG-typemain sequence orsubgiantstarHD 43197, located approximately 204light years away in theconstellationCanis Major. This planet has aminimum mass 55% that ofJupiter and takes 0.85 years to orbit the star at asemimajor axis of 0.882AU.[2] It has a higheccentricity of 0.74, but itsinclination is not known. This planet was detected byHARPS on October 19, 2009, together with 29 other planets.
In 2022, a secondsuper-Jovian planet was discovered orbiting HD 43197 using a combination ofradial velocity andastrometry. Assuming HD 43197 b shares the outer planet'sorbital inclination, its true mass would be about4 MJ.[1]
The planet HD 43197 b is namedEquiano. The name was selected in theNameExoWorlds campaign byNigeria, during the 100th anniversary of theIAU.Olaudah Equiano was a writer and abolitionist fromIhiala, Nigeria who fought injustice and for the elimination of theslave trade.[3][4]
