TheGurguéia River is a river inPiauí state of northeasternBrazil. The Gurguéia is atributary of theParnaíba River, which originates in theChapada das Mangabeiras in the southern portion of the state, and flows north to join the Parnaíba. TheSerra Uruçui separates the Gurguéia basin from theUruçui-Preto basin to the west, and theSerra da Capivara separates the Gurguéia basin from that of thePiauí to the east.
TheCerrado savannas occupy most of the Gurguéia basin, while several large enclaves ofAtlantic dry forest lie east of the river, separating the Cerrado from the dryCaatinga shrublands further east.
