Gunther of Pairis[1] (c. 1150 – c. 1220) was aGermanCistercian monk and author, writing inLatin.
His best-known work is hisHistoria Constantinopolitana about theFourth Crusade, in a mixture of prose and verse. It was based on the account of Martin of Pairis, abbot ofPairis Abbey, and includes thesiege andlooting ofConstantinople. His is the only western account to state explicitly that the crusaders pillaged Greek churches, as the other accounts were written by the pillagers themselves, such asGeoffrey of Villehardouin, who wroteThe Conquest of Constantinople.
Gunther also wroteSolimarius, about theFirst Crusade, andLigurinus, anepic aboutFrederick Barbarossa.
