Gunclje (pronounced[ˈɡuːntsljɛ];German:Gunzle[2]) is a settlement in centralSlovenia, immediately northwest of the capitalLjubljana. It belongs to theŠentvid District of theCity Municipality of Ljubljana. It is part of the traditional region ofUpper Carniola and is now included with the rest of the municipality in theCentral Slovenia Statistical Region.
Gunclje was first attested in written sources in 1430 asGüntzleinsdorff, and later aszu Güntzlach in 1438 andKünczlach in 1455 (both based on the Slovenelocative plural) andGüntzla (in 1449), among other spellings.[3][4] The nameGunclje is derived from the Slavic personal name*Guncelj (derived in turn fromOld High GermanGunzelîn, a diminutive ofGunzo), and likely refers to an early inhabitant of the place.[3]
The village core of Gunclje, extending from thechapel-shrine in the center of the village to a crucifix shrine at the edge of the woods, has been registered as cultural heritage. The village core preserves the character as alinear settlement (a village lying almost entirely along a single road) with perpendicularly placed houses and farm buildings aligned with them.[5]
