TheGuam Police Department (Chamorro:Dipåttamenton Polisian Guåhan[1]) is the law enforcement agency in theUnited States territory ofGuam. The department hasjurisdiction across the entire territory, except for areas covered by theport,airport andmilitary bases; the Guam Police Department has authority over military dependents on base, sincecivilians cannot be charged under theUniform Code of Military Justice.
The police department is headquartered in the Guam Police Department Building in the Tiyan area ofBarrigada,[2] and operates four precincts.[3]
The Guam Police Department became its own entity in 1985, following operations as the Department of Public Safety in 1952. Prior to this, law enforcement on Guam was handled by theU.S. Navy administeredGuam Insular Guard and the civilian runGuam Insular Patrol Force.[citation needed]
