
Gruffydd Maelor (died 1191) was a Prince ofPowys Fadog in Wales. He married a daughter of KingOwain Gwynedd, firstPrince of Wales, and was a brother of PrinceOwain Brogyntyn, ancestor of theBarons of Cymmer-yn-Edeirnion.
Maelor was a son of PrinceMadog ap Maredudd by Susanna, daughter of KingGruffudd ap Cynan of theHouse of Aberffraw. He is known as Gruffydd Maelor I to distinguish him from his grandson,Gruffydd Maelor II, Lord ofDinas Bran.
He was to be the founder of the principal ruling family of northern Powys during the 13th century.

On his father's death in 1160 Powys was divided between his three sons (Gruffydd,Owain Brogyntyn andOwain Fychan), a nephew (PrinceOwain Cyfeiliog) and a half-brother (PrinceIorwerth Goch ap Maredudd).
Gruffydd received the Lordship ofMaelor (also known as Bromfield) and the Lordship ofIâl (also known as Yale), as his allotted portion of Powys.[1]
These lordships later merged and became theLordship of Bromfield and Yale, belonging toJohn de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey, who was later defeated at theBattle of Stirling Bridge byWilliam Wallace.[2][3]
Gruffydd later addedNanheudwy,Cynllaith Owain andMochnant Is Rhaeadr after the death of his half-brother Owain Fychan in 1187.
His inherited and acquired lands in effect unified and reunited most of northern Powys forming what became known asPowys Fadog after it was inherited by his son.
He married PrincessAngharad, his cousin, and daughter ofOwain Gwynedd, King ofGwynedd.[4]
