Greene County is located in the southwestern portion ofOhio. As of the2020 census, the population was 167,966.[2] Itscounty seat isXenia and its largest city isBeavercreek.[3] The county was established on March 24, 1803[4] andnamed for GeneralNathanael Greene,[5] an officer in theRevolutionary War. Greene County is part of theDayton, OHMetropolitan Statistical Area.

According to theUnited States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 416 square miles (1,080 km2), of which 414 square miles (1,070 km2) is land and 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2) (0.6%) is water.[6]

As of thecensus[19] of 2020, there were 167,996 people, 65,915 households, and 42,983 families living in the county. Thepopulation density was 406.1 inhabitants per square mile (156.8/km2). There were 71,336 housing units at an average density of 172.5 per square mile (66.6/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 81.5%White, 6.8%African American, 0.2%Native American, 3.3%Asian, 1.1% fromother races, and 6.3% from two or more races.Hispanic orLatino of any race were 3.1% of the population.[20]

There were 65,915 households, of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% weremarried couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no spouse present, 3.6% had a male householder with no spouse present, and 34.7% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 3.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.[21]

The median age in the county was 39.0 years. 20.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 11.6% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.5% were from 25 to 44; 23.3% were from 45 to 64; and 19.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the county was 50.2% male and 49.8% female.[22]

The median income for a household in the county was $70,055, and the median income for a family was $90,453.[23] 10.6% of the population were below thepoverty line, including 13.6% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.[24] Thelabor force participation rate for those aged 20 to 64 was 77.6%.[25] 94.0% of the population over the age of 25 had obtained ahigh school diploma orequivalency, 39.7% of those over the age of 25 heldbachelor's degrees.[26]

2010 census

As of the2010 United States census, there were 161,573 people, 62,770 households, and 41,696 families living in the county.[27] The population density was 390.5 inhabitants per square mile (150.8/km2). There were 68,241 housing units at an average density of 164.9 units per square mile (63.7 units/km2).[28] The racial makeup of the county was 86.4% white, 7.2% black or African American, 2.9% Asian, 0.3% American Indian, 0.1% Pacific islander, 0.5% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Those of Hispanic or Latino origin made up 2.1% of the population.[27] In terms of ancestry, 26.4% wereGerman, 15.7% wereAmerican, 13.0% wereIrish, and 10.9% wereEnglish.[29]

Of the 62,770 households, 30.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.9% were married couples living together, 10.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 33.6% were non-families, and 26.5% of all households were made up of individuals. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.95. The median age was 37.2 years.[27]

The median income for a household in the county was $56,679 and the median income for a family was $70,817. Males had a median income of $53,614 versus $37,056 for females. The per capita income for the county was $28,328. About 7.8% of families and 11.4% of the population were below thepoverty line, including 15.3% of those under age 18 and 5.1% of those age 65 or over.[30]

2000 census

As of thecensus of 2010, there were 161,573 people, 61,825 households, and 39,160 families living in the county. The population density was 356 inhabitants per square mile (137/km2). There were 58,224 housing units at an average density of 140 units per square mile (54 units/km2). The racial makeup of the county was 86.4%White, 7.2%Black orAfrican American, 0.3%Native American, 2.9%Asian, 0.1%Pacific Islander, 0.38% fromother races, and 1.66% from two or more races. 1.23% of the population wereHispanic orLatino of any race.

There were 55,312 households, out of which 32.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% weremarried couples living together, 9.60% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.20% were non-families. 23.00% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.70% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the county, the population was spread out, with 23.90% under the age of 18, 13.70% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $48,656, and the median income for a family was $57,954. Males had a median income of $42,338 versus $28,457 for females. Theper capita income for the county was $23,057. About 5.20% of families and 8.50% of the population were below thepoverty line, including 8.70% of those under age 18 and 6.90% of those age 65 or over.

Politics

Greene County is a Republican stronghold in presidential elections. The only times the county has voted for the Democratic nominee were forFranklin D. Roosevelt in1936 andLyndon B. Johnson in1964, both of them decisive Democratic victories at the national level.
