TheGreen Car of the Year is aCar of the Year award from theGreen Car Journal. The winner is selected by an 11-member panel comprising automotive and environmental experts. Invited jurors have includedMario Andretti;Carroll Shelby,Jay Leno, Carl Pope (Sierra Club),Christopher Flavin (Worldwatch Institute),Jonathan Lash (World Resources Institute) andJean-Michel Cousteau (Ocean Futures Society).

A separateGreen Truck of the Year award was launched in 2015.[1]

In early October 2015, the 2009 and 2010 awards were rescinded as a result of theVolkswagen emissions scandal.[2]

Winners

The 2011Chevrolet Voltplug-in hybrid was awarded the 2011 Green Car of the Year.
The 2013Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid was awarded the 2013 Green Car of the Year together with theEcoBoost gasoline engine option, andthe conventional hybrid variant.
The 2014BMW i3 was awarded the 2015 Green Car of the Year.
2006 —Mercury Mariner Hybrid[3]
2007 —Toyota Camry Hybrid[4]
2008 —Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid[5]
2009 —Volkswagen Jetta Clean Diesel[6] (Rescinded due toVolkswagen emissions scandal)[7])
The other four finalists were theBMW 335d, theFord Fusion Hybrid,Saturn Vue 2 Mode Hybrid, and theSmart Fortwo.[6] In 2015,VW admitted their diesel line from 2009-2015 was designed to correctly limit nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions only during static testing.[8][2])
2010 —Audi A3 TDI Clean Diesel[9] (Rescinded due toVolkswagen emissions scandal)[10])
The other finalists were theHonda Insight, theMercury Milan Hybrid, theToyota Prius and theclean dieselVW Golf TDI.[9] Like the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta, the winning 2010 Audi and the 2010 VW Golf were diesel vehicles thatVolkswagen admitted in 2015 were designed to limit NOx emissions only when being emission tested.
2011 —Chevrolet Voltplug-in hybrid.[11][12]
The other finalists were theNissan Leafbattery electric car, thehybrid electric versions of theHyundai Sonata and theLincoln MKZ, and the gasoline-poweredFord Fiesta, which achieves 40 miles per US gallon (5.9 L/100 km; 48 mpg‑imp) in highway driving.[11][13]
2012 —Honda Civic GXnatural gas vehicle.[14]
The other finalists were theFord Focus Electric andMitsubishi i battery electric cars,Toyota Prius v hybrid electric car, and theVolkswagen Passat TDIclean diesel.[15] (See 2009 and 2010 listings regarding clean diesel.)
2013 —Ford Fusion second generation line-up, including theEcoBoost gasoline engine option, and theFusion hybrid and plug-in variants.[16]
The other finalists were theFord C-Max hybrid and plug-in hybrid,Dodge Dart Aero,Toyota Prius c hybrid electric car, and theMazda CX-5.[17]
2014 —Honda Accord ninth generation line-up, including gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants.[18]
The other finalists were theBMW 328d,Audi A6 TDI,Toyota Corolla, and theMazda3.[19]
2015 —BMW i3[20]
The other finalists were theAudi A3 TDI,Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel,third generation Honda Fit, andseventh-generation Volkswagen Golf line-up.[21]
2016 —Second generation Chevrolet Volt[22]
The other finalists were theAudi A3 e-tron, thefourth generation Toyota Prius, the2016 Hyundai Sonata, and the2016 Honda Civic. The Chevrolet Volt became the first model to be awarded Green Car Of The Year more than once.[22]
2017 —Chevrolet Bolt EV[23]
The other finalists were theToyota Prius Prime, theChrysler Pacifica Hybrid, theKia Optima (including hybrid and plug-in hybrid models) and theBMW 330e iPerformance.[23]
2018 —Honda Clarity group of vehicles[24]
2019 —Honda Insight[25]
2020 —Toyota Corolla[26]
2021 —Ford Mustang Mach-E
2022 —Audi Q4 e-tron
2023 —Toyota Crown[27]
