Greek Football Super Cup (Greek:Ποδοσφαιρικό Σούπερ Καπ Ελλάδος), formerly known asFriendship and Solidarity Cup (Greek:Κύπελλο Φιλίας και Αλληλεγγύης) and now officially known asBetsson Super Cup (Greek:Betsson Σούπερ Καπ) for sponsorship reasons[2] is a Greekassociation football one-match competition, which is contested annually between the champions of the previousSuper League Greece season and the holders of theGreek Cup.[3][4][5]
In January 2025, the Hellenic Football Federation decided in the restoration of the Super Cup after 18 years, effective from the beginning of 2025–26 football season in Greece. According to the decision, if the Super League Greece champions also won the Greek Football Cup, then the cup runners-up will provide the opposition for the match.[6]
From 1948 to 1976 several matches between the Greek champions and the Greek Cup winners were held, but without any official recognition.[7][8] The institution got officially started in 1980 underPSAT. According to the announcement, if the champions ofAlpha Ethniki and the Cup-winners were the same club, the match would not be held. For various reasons, the institution was interrupted until 1987 when, theHFF reestablished it under the nameFriendship and Solidarity Cup, which was held with breaks until 1996. In ten years, seven finals were held in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994 and 1996.[9]
The institution was then abolished, mainly due to the difficulty of controlling fanaticism in derby matches. For example, in 1990, the match between the champion,Panathinaikos and the Cup winner,Olympiacos was cancelled, for fear of incidents due to the tense situation between the fans caused by the transfer ofStratos Apostolakis from the first club to the latter. Matches were also not played in 1991 and 1995, when Panathinaikos won the double, but not in 1997 and 1998. The conquest of the double by Olympiacos in the following year and the general interest of continuing the institution waned, despite the fact that matches could have been held between 2000 and 2003. In the three-year period that followed Panathinaikos and Olympiacos emerged as double winners.[10]
In 2007, the HFF reintroduced the institution under the name "Super Cup", but it was not continued as in the following years Olympiacos and Panathinaikos won the double. In 2011, the match between the champion, Olympiacos and the Cup winner, AEK Athens was scheduled but never took place for unknown reasons. In the following two seasons Olympiacos won the double and the competition was discontinued.[3]
From 1987 to 1994, the institution was held at theOlympic Stadium inAthens, while in 1980, 1996 and 2007 they were held atKaraiskakis Stadium.[11] The matches were single-elimination and in the event of no winner was determined during regular time, a 30 minutes ofextra time followed and if there was still no winner, apenalty shoot-out was held, which took place twice: in 1989 and 1996.[3][12] On 21 January 2025, at a meeting of the Professional Football Committee at the offices of the Hellenic Football Federation, the HFF decided in the restoration of the Super Cup after 18 years.[13]
