Theinternal granular layer of the cerebral cortex, also commonly referred to as thegranular layer of the cortex, is thelayer IV in the subdivision of the mammaliancerebral cortex into6 layers. The adjectiveinternal is used in opposition to theexternal granular layer of the cortex, the termgranular refers to thegranule cells found here.
This layer receives theafferent connections from thethalamus and from other cortical regions and sends connections to the other layers. Theline of Gennari (occipital stripe) is also present in this layer.
