TheGovernment of Gujarat, also known asGujaratGovernment, is the supreme governing authority of theIndian state ofGujarat and its33 districts. It consists of anexecutive of the legislators appointed by theGovernor of Gujarat, ajudiciary and of a publicly electedlegislative body.
Like other states in India, the head of state of Gujarat is theGovernor, appointed by thePresident of India on the advice of the Central (Union) government. The governor's role is largely ceremonial, but the governor considers the legislative composition and appoints theChief Minister, who is the main head of government, as chair of theCouncil of Ministers of Gujarat and is vested, in some instances alone but as to most executive powers by Council consensus with virtually all of the executive powers.
Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, houses the relevantVidhan Sabha (also known as theGujarat Legislative Assembly) and the secretariat. TheGujarat High Court inAhmedabad, has jurisdiction over the state as to state laws.[1]
The present legislative assembly isunicameral, consisting of 182Members of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.As). Its term is 5 years, unless sooner dissolved.[2][3]
TheGujarat Legislative Assembly or Gujarat Vidhan Sabha is theunicameral legislature of the Indian state ofGujarat, in the state capitalGandhinagar. Presently, 182 members of the Legislative Assembly are directlyelected from single-memberconstituencies (seats). It has a term of 5 years unless it is dissolved sooner. 13 constituencies are reserved for scheduled castes and 27 constituencies for scheduled tribes. From its majority party group or by way of a grand coalition cabinet of its prominent members, the state's Executive namely the Government of Gujarat is formed.
Since 1995, the Gujarat Legislative Assembly has been controlled by theBharatiya Janata Party with an absolute majority in the House.Local governments function at the basic level. It is the third level of government apart from union and state governments. It consists ofpanchayats in rural areas andmunicipalities in urban areas. They are elected directly or indirectly by the people. For administrative purposes, Gujarat is structurally divided intodistricts (Zilas),prants (subdivisions),talukas, andvillages, primarily to facilitate land revenue administration.The state is divided into 34 districts, 122 prants, 265 talukas and 18,584 revenue villages.[4][5][6] There are 17municipal corporations, 152municipalities, 33district panchayats, 247taluka panchayats, and 16,778gram panchayats, for local governance.[7][8][9]
