In 1947, India achieved independence from the United Kingdom. After independence, the chief commissioner and, later, the lieutenant governor, has been appointed by thePresident of India. The current Lieutenant Governor isDevendra Kumar Joshi. His official residence is in Raj Nivas,Port Blair.[1][2]
Following Indian independence, the Chief Commissioner of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was the nominal head of the territory, appointed by thePresident of India.
