Gorka Iraizoz Moreno (born 6 March 1981) is a Spanish formerfootballer who played as agoalkeeper, currentlymanager ofGernika Club.

He spent most of his professional career withAthletic Bilbao, appearing in 392 official games.[2] InLa Liga he also representedEspanyol andGirona, winning the2006 Copa del Rey with the first club.

Club career

Early career and Espanyol

Iraizoz was born inPamplona,Navarre and raised in nearbyAnsoáin.[3][4] After beginning his football career with local clubUDC Chantrea,[5] he moved to theBasque Country withAthletic Bilbao, serving stints with affiliatesCD Basconia andBilbao Athletic.[6]

Arriving atRCD Espanyol in July 2002, Iraizoz spent two seasons with itsB side, also having a loan spell atSD Eibar in theSegunda División.[7] He made hisLa Liga debut on 21 December 2005, in a 2–1 away win againstDeportivo de La Coruña.[8] He was second choice behindCarlos Kameni for the2006–07 season,[9] but was the regular in the team'srun to the final of theUEFA Cup,[10][11] notably excelling in the quarter-final second leg away toS.L. Benfica (0–0 draw, 3–2 on aggregate).[12][13]

During his time inBarcelona, Iraizoz learned to speak fluentCatalan.[7]

Athletic Bilbao

On 7 August 2007, Iraizoz signed for Athletic Bilbao for4.6 million, returning to the club he spent one-and-a-half seasons with,[14] this time as the undisputed starter.[15] However, due to a severe injury, he was left out of the squad for the second part ofthe campaign,[16] and his place (and shirt number) was taken by 37-year-oldArmando, signed fromCádiz CF until June 2008.[17]

Iraizoz rarely missed a league game the following years.[18] On 16 January 2010, hisPlayer of the match performance helped the team hold on to its early home lead againstReal Madrid, constantly denyingKaká andCristiano Ronaldo's efforts.[19][20] Additionally, he was in goal during the2009[21] and2012 finals[22] of theCopa del Rey lost toFC Barcelona,[23] and also helped defeat that opponent 5–1 on aggregate in the2015 Supercopa de España for his only accolade at theSan Mamés Stadium.[24][25]

In the opening match of2014–15, atMálaga CF, Iraizoz appeared to score a last-minute equaliser with a header, but the goal was disallowed, apparently incorrectly.[26] Having lost his starting place toKepa Arrizabalaga, at the end of the2016–17 season Athletic announced that the 36-year-old would be leaving the club at the end of his contract.[27][4]

Girona

On 14 June 2017, Iraizoz agreed to a two-year deal atGirona FC,promoted to the top flight for the first time ever.[28] He spent most of his spell at theEstadi Montilivi as backup toYassine Bounou.[29][30]

Iraizoz left the club at the end of the2018–19 season, which ended in relegation.[31]

Coaching

After retiring aged 38, Iraizoz later worked as manager of Barakaldo's youths, goalkeeper coach of its first team and assistant atGernika Club andSD Logroñés under former Athletic playerAitor Larrazábal. After the latter became Gernika'ssporting director in May 2024, he named him head coach at theSegunda Federación side.[32][33]

International career

Iraizoz never earned anycaps forSpain at any level. He did feature for the unofficialBasque Country regional team.[34][35]
