Goodrington is an area of Paignton inDevon, England. It is situated inTor Bay and lies betweenPaignton town centre andBrixham, less than 1 mile (1.6 km) south of centralPaignton. Its beach is known asGoodrington Sands.
Goodrington is mentioned in theDomesday Book ofAD 1086 asGodrintone in the ancienthundred of Kerswell.[2] The village became part ofHaytor Hundred when it was derived from Kerswell Hundred. In the 18th century the name was written asGoderington.[3] In the late 19th century, the administrative functions of the hundred became a part of other units of government. In 1968 three councils were amalgamated, then since 1972 theTorbay Council provides many governmental services for Goodrington.
Goodrington has arailway station, on thePaignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, awater park, three beaches, a park with boating lake, various shops and other facilities, including a petrol station, public house and several holiday parks.[4] To the south there is also a popular dog walking route running along the coast toBroadsands. This passes several fishing spots and "Sugarloaf", a large hill with a view of the Bay. The area has two churches,St. George's (Anglican) and the Goodrington Methodist Church.
The main road passing Goodrington is Dartmouth Road (A379) which is served byStagecoach Devon service 12 betweenBrixham andNewton Abbot every 10 minutes. In additionTorbay Mini Buses operate service 25 betweenPaignton (Morrisons), and Roundham Road (close to Youngs Park) via thetown centre on an hourly basis.
The location is home to the largest knownDavey Elm in theUK.[5] Goodrington Park and Youngs Park are now tended by a local group called Youngs Park People who keep the green in excellent condition with many planted areas.
