Surgeon Vice AdmiralSir Godfrey James Milton-ThompsonKBE KStJ FRCP (25 April 1930 – 23 September 2012) was a seniorRoyal Navy officer. From 1988 to 1990, he wasSurgeon-General, senior medical officer of theBritish Armed Forces.
Milton-Thompson was the younger son of theRevd James Milton-Thompson, aChurch of Englandpriest on the Wirral,Cheshire. He was educated atEastbourne College before going to readMedicine atQueens' College, Cambridge (MA)[1] and further medical study atSt Thomas' Hospital (MB,BChir). He was elected aFellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1974.
Milton-Thompson joined the Royal Navy in 1955, in which he saw 35 years active service. He was Surgeon General in theMinistry of Defence from 1988 to 1990.[2] He was aQueen's Honorary Physician (QHP) from 1982 until 1990. From 1990 until 1995 he becameHonorary Colonel of211th (Wessex) Field HospitalRoyal Army Medical Corps.
Milton-Thompson served asHospitaller of theMost Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem andChairman of the St John Fellowship.
Milton-Thompson married Noreen Fitzmaurice, the daughter of Sir Desmond FitzmauriceCIE,[3] in 1952. They had three daughters.
