The novel tells the story of Otmar Bukovnik, a retired tailor who deeply loved his wife, children, and dog, but has been abandoned by his family. His wife, Lija, moved toAmerica to be with their son Boris, who has built his own family there, and Otmar now receives only brief letters or greeting cards from her. The protagonist spends his days alone and isolated in Old Ljubljana, which is vividly and richly described in the novel. He retreats into his own thoughts and emotions, passionately and fervently talking to himself or to God. Soon, strange events begin to occur, originating from within him. The first is the unintentional murder of Mr. Jeločnik, which authorities declare a suicide, bringing Otmar a sense of liberation despite not being a suspect. A fleeting romantic episode with Miss Maja convinces him that miracles still exist.
