Giuseppe Angeli (Venice 1709- Venice, 1798) was an Italian painter of the lateBaroque, known for depicting both genre and religious subjects.

Biography

He trained in the studio ofGiambattista Piazzetta. By 1741, he was enrolled in the guild of painters. In 1756, he began as an instructor at theAcademy of Fine Arts of Venice; in 1772, he became president of the Academy.

He is known for two canvases in the church ofSan Stae and for fresco murals at theVilla Widmann-Foscari atMira, nearPadua. His other works include anImmaculate Conception with Saints (ca. 1760) moved to sacristy ofSan Francesco della Vigna; two scenes of theVia Crucis for the church ofSanta Maria Zobenigo; the altarpiece ofStPietro I Orseolo receives the monk's habit from St Romuald in the church of Santa Maria della Pietà; anImmaculate Conception with Saints in the basilica ofSanta Maria Gloriosa dei Frari; anEcstasy of St Francis in theSanctuary of the Madonna del Pilastrello at Lendinara; anApparition of the Virgin to St Simon Stock at the church ofSanta Maria Maddalena; the frescoes in the salone ofVilla Giovanelli Colonna atNoventa Padovana, a ceiling in theScuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, and in thePalazzo Barbaro-Curtis in Venice; and a painting of aSoldato con tamburo in the Louvre.[1][2] TheMuseum Cerralbo inMadrid owns a portrait of Federico Maria Giovannelli,Patriarch of Venice.[3] TheNational Gallery of Art in Washington has an oil painting made forSan Giorgio in Alga, Venice, ofElijah Taken Up in a Chariot of Fire among itsSamuel H. Kress Collection pictures.[4]
