Giovanolaia is a subgenus of the genusPlasmodium created by Corradettiet al. in 1963.[1][2] The parasites within this subgenus infectbirds.
This subgenus was shown on the basis of DNA analysis to bepolyphyletic. This is unsurprising – it has been awastebasket taxon. A revision of this subgenus on a morphological basis by Landauet al. moved several of the species in this subgenus into a new subgenusPapernaia.[2]
Species in the subgenusGiovanolaia have the following characteristics:
Schizonts contain plentiful cytoplasm, are larger than the host cellnucleus and frequently displace it. They are found only in matureerythrocytes.
Gametocytes are elongated.
Both gametocytes and schizonts are stretched along the red cell nucleus.
Exoerythrocytic schizogony occurs in themononuclear phagocyte system.
