Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (French pronunciation:[pɛtʃipɛʁikɑʁ];[3] born 8 July 2003) is a French professionaltennis player. He has a career-highATP singles ranking of world No. 29, achieved on 24 February 2025 and a doubles ranking of No. 204, achieved on 14 July 2025.[2] He is currently the No. 7 singles player from France.[4]

One of the most powerful servers in professional tennis,[5] at the2025 Wimbledon Championships he broke the tournament record with a 153-mile-per-hour (246 km/h) serve, and set the record for the fastest second serve ever with a serve of 147 mph (237 km/h).[6]

Early life

Mpetshi Perricard was born inLyon to Ghislain Mpetshi and Sylvie Perricard; his father is a Congolese former semi-professional footballer, while his mother is a former volleyball player.[7][8] He has two sisters, Ariane and Daphnée, the latter of whom is also a tennis player.[1][9]

Career

2021: Junior French Open champion, Turned Pro

Mpetshi Perricard won the2021 French Open boys' doubles title, partnered with compatriotArthur Fils.[1] He also reached the semifinals of thesingles tournament, losing to Fils.[10]

2023: Challenger title, top 200

Mpetshi Perricard won his firstATP Challenger singles title at the2023 León Open, defeatingJuan Pablo Ficovich in the finals.[11][12]

He received a wildcard for the2023 French Open for his Grand Slam debut, but lost to Major debutantGenaro Alberto Olivieri.[13]

In June, Mpetshi Perricard made hisATP Tour debut at theRosmalen Open as a qualifier, losing in the first round toJordan Thompson.[citation needed]

In October, Mpetshi Perricard won his first two matches on theATP Tour inAntwerp as a qualifier and reached his first ATP quarterfinal, defeating sixth seedRoberto Carballés Baena in the first round,[14] and wildcard and home favoriteDavid Goffin in the second round,[15] but lost in the quarterfinals against the eventual winner of the tournament, Alexander Bublik. As a result he entered the top 200 on 23 October 2023.[2]

2024: First ATP 500 title in Basel, top 30

In January, Mpetshi Pericard participated in his firstAustralian Open qualifying, but lost in the final round to fellow countrymanHugo Grenier.[citation needed]

In February, Mpetshi Perricard won his first title of the year on theATP Challenger Tour, his second career title, at the2024 Lexus Nottingham Challenger, defeating fellow countrymanMatteo Martineau in the final.[16] In April, Mpetshi Perricard won back-to-backChallenger titles in Mexico, at the2024 Morelos Open, defeatingNicolas Mejia in the final,[17] and then at the2024 GNP Seguros Tennis Open in Acapulco, defeatingAdam Walton in the final.[18] As a result, he reached the top 125 on 22 April 2024.[2]

In May, at the2024 ATP Lyon Open, Mpetshi Perricard won his first title on theATP Tour as a wildcard with wins overLorenzo Sonego,Yoshihito Nishioka by walkover,[19] compatriot and qualifierHugo Gaston, second seedAlexander Bublik[20] and sixth seedTomás Martín Etcheverry in the final.[21] He became the lowest-ranked titlist in the tournament's history. As a result, he climbed more than 50 spots in the singles rankings to a career-high in the top 70 at world No. 66 on 27 May 2024.[22] He received a wildcard for the2024 French Open for the second year in a row.[23]

At the beginning of the grass season, he qualified for the2024 Queen's Club Championships and upset sixth seedBen Shelton in the first round.[24] As a result he reached the top 60 in the rankings at world No. 59 on 24 June 2024.[2] At the2024 Wimbledon Championships, Mpetshi Perricard entered the main draw as a lucky loser, having lost toMaxime Janvier in the qualifying rounds. In the first round, he defeated twentieth seedSebastian Korda in a five-set match with four tiebreaks, producing 51 aces to record his first Major win.[25][26] He then reached the fourth round by defeatingYoshihito Nishioka in the second round andEmil Ruusuvuori in the third round.[27][28] He lost in the fourth round toLorenzo Musetti.[29] Mpetchi Perricard became the first lucky loser to reach the fourth round at the Wimbledon Championships sinceDick Norman in1995.[30]

At the2024 Swiss Indoors in Basel, Mpetshi Perricard won his firstATP 500 title defeating again Ben Shelton. Ranked No. 50, he became the lowest-ranked champion since the tournament became a tour-level event in 1975.[31] As a result he reached a new career-high ranking of No. 31 on 28 October 2024.[32] On his main draw debut at his home tournament, the2024 Rolex Paris Masters, where he received a wildcard, he upset 14th seedFrances Tiafoe in three sets.[33] He lost toKaren Khachanov in three sets.[34] As a result, he reached the top 30 on 4 November 2024.[2]

2025: First French Open win

He opened the season by reaching the semifinals inBrisbane, but exited in the first round at theAustralian Open. He managed to reach the second round atIndian Wells, but subsequently suffered five exits in her debut match.

In May, Mpetshi Perricard won his firstChallenger title in more than a year at theParibas Primrose Bordeaux, defeatingNikoloz Basilashvili in the final.[35] He exits in the second round inHamburg. Later that month, Mpetshi Perricard won his first match at theFrench Open by defeatingZizou Bergs in the first round.[36] He lost in the second round toDamir Džumhur.[37]

During the grass season, he exited in the first round in all three tournaments he played, includingWimbledon, where, however, he stood out by taking world number 5,Taylor Fritz, to the fifth set. In the match, he broke the tournament record in the first round with a 153 mph serve, yet still lost the point to Taylor Fritz.[6]

Reaches semifinals atWinston-Salem Open, exits inUS Open debut. InShanghai he reached the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 for the first time, defeating Taylor Fritz and earning his first victory against a top 10 player. At theEuropean Open he reached the semifinal, obtaining his second victory against a top 10 player,Lorenzo Musetti. He then exited in the first round at theSwiss Indoors, where he was the defending champion, at theParis Masters and at theMoselle Open.

Playing style

Mpetshi Perricard is one of the mostpowerful servers in professional tennis, with an average first serve of 135 mph and average second serve of 123 mph on average as of December 2024. His ball toss isn't high compared to a lot of big servers but he is able to generate immense power with his height and athleticism.[5]
