Giandomenico MestoCavaliere OMRI (Italian pronunciation:[dʒandoˈmeːnikoˈmɛsto]; born 25 May 1982) is a former Italianfootballer. Known for his pace, work-rate, and versatility, Mesto usually played as afull-back or as awide midfielder on the right flank.[2]
After making his professional debut during the1998–99 Serie B season, Mesto has spent the majority of his career atReggina, aside from spells withCremonese andFermana during the 2001–02Serie C2 andC1 seasons, makine 138 appearances and scoring 1 goal; he was loaned out toUdinese during the2007–08 season. In 2008, he transferred toGenoa, where he remained for four seasons. In 2012, he moved toNapoli where he remained until the2014–15 Serie A season, winning aCoppa Italia and theSupercoppa Italiana in 2014.[3] At the end of the season, his contract was not renewed.[4] On 31 December 2015 he signed with Greek sidePanathinaikos for one and a half years.[5] On 1 June 2016, Mesto extended his contract with the club for another year till the summer of 2018.[6]
At international level, Mesto appeared in theItalian under-21 national team which won the2004 UEFA European Under-21 Championship,[7] and was a member of the under-23Olympic squad which won the bronze medal at the2004 Summer Olympics inAthens.[8][9] Afterwards, he made his senior international debut forItaly a year later, in a 1–1 friendly draw againstSerbia and Montenegro, on 8 June 2005; in total, he has obtained three caps for Italy.[10]
