Italian actor (born 1942)
Giancarlo Giannini (Italian: [dʒaŋˈkarlo dʒanˈniːni] ; born 1 August 1942) is an Italian actor. He won theCannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor for his performance inLove and Anarchy (1973) and received anAcademy Award nomination forSeven Beauties (1975). He is also a four-time recipient of theDavid di Donatello Award for Best Actor .
Giannini began his career on stage, starring inFranco Zeffirelli 's productions ofRomeo and Juliet andA Midsummer Night's Dream . After appearing predominantly on television throughout the early 1960s, he had his first lead role in a film inRita the Mosquito (1965), the first of many collaborations with filmmakerLina Wertmüller . He rose to international stardom through Wertmüller'sThe Seduction of Mimi (1972),Love and Anarchy (1973),Swept Away (1974), culminating in his Oscar-nominated turn inSeven Beauties (1975).[ 1]
His other films includeThe Innocent (1976),Lili Marleen (1980),New York Stories (1990),A Walk in the Clouds (1995),Hannibal (2001),Man on Fire (2004), and theJames Bond filmsCasino Royale (2006) andQuantum of Solace (2008). He is also adubbing artist, contributing voice work to the Italian-language versions of dozens of films since the 1960s.[ 2] He has been the main Italian dubber ofAl Pacino since 1975,[ 3] and has also dubbedJack Nicholson ,Michael Douglas , andHelmut Berger .
Giannini was born inLa Spezia and he spent most of his childhood in the settlement of Pitelli. In 1952, Giannini and his family moved toNaples where he received a diploma in electronic engineering at the Alessandro Volta Technological State Technical Institute.[ 4] When he was eighteen, he moved toRome and studied at theAccademia Nazionale di Arte Drammatica Silvio D'Amico .[ 5]
Giannini made his stage debut at the age of 18, oppositeLilla Brignone inIn memoria di una signora amica , directed byGiuseppe Patroni Griffi . His breakthrough came when he was cast byFranco Zeffirelli in a production ofRomeo and Juliet which played atThe Old Vic .[ 6]

He appeared in supporting roles inAnzio andThe Secret of Santa Vittoria , and starred in the original version ofSwept Away . In 1967, he was a special guest on an episode ofMina 's TV show "Sabato Sera". He had his breakthrough in 1970.[ 7] In 1971, he appeared inE le stelle stanno a guardare , a television adaptation ofA. J. Cronin 's novelThe Stars Look Down .[ 8]
Giannini won aCannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor for his performance inLove and Anarchy (1973).[ 9] [ 10] He had big box office hits withHow Funny Can Sex Be? (1973) andThe Sensual Man (1974).[ 7] In 1976, he starred inSeven Beauties , for which he was nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Actor .[ 11] Giannini is known for his starring roles in films directed byLina Wertmüller .[ 12] In addition toSeven Beauties andSwept Away , he also appeared inThe Seduction of Mimi ,Love and Anarchy ,A Night Full of Rain ,Blood Feud , andFrancesca e Nunziata .[ 13]
Giannini has also achieved some international success. His fluency in English has brought him a number of featured roles in Hollywood productions, most notably as Inspector Pazzi inHannibal . He also appeared inMan on Fire . Giannini played Alberto Aragón inA Walk in the Clouds in 1995, and EmperorShaddam IV in the2000Dune miniseries .[ 14] In 2002, he starred in thehorror film Darkness . He later portrayed French agentRené Mathis in theJames Bond filmsCasino Royale (2006) andQuantum of Solace (2008).[ 15]
In 2009, Giannini received a star on theItalian Walk of Fame in Toronto, Canada.[ 16] On March 6, 2023, he received a star on theHollywood Walk of Fame .[ 17] [ 18] [ 19]
Giannini inThe Pizza Triangle (1970) Giannini has had a successful career as a voice actor and dubber. He helped with the foundation of theC.V.D. along withRenato Turi ,Corrado Gaipa ,Valeria Valeri ,Oreste Lionello ,Wanda Tettoni and other dubbers.[ 20] [ 21]
Giannini is the main Italian voice dubber ofAl Pacino .[ 22] Both he andFerruccio Amendola were the primary dubbers of Pacino until Amendola's death in 2001 when Giannini became the main voice dubber.[ 23] He also dubbedJack Nicholson 's voice asJack Torrance in the Italian release ofThe Shining and theJoker inBatman andMichael Douglas asGordon Gekko inWall Street and the2010 sequel as well as dubbing other actors such asDustin Hoffman ,Gérard Depardieu ,Ryan O'Neal ,Jeremy Irons ,Mel Gibson ,Tim Allen ,Leonard Whiting andIan McKellen in some of their work.[ 24]
In Giannini's animated roles, he voiced Carl Fredricksen (voiced byEd Asner ) in the Italian dub of the Pixar filmUp . He also provided the Italian voice of Raul Menendez in theCall of Duty game franchise.[ 25] Outside of dubbing, he also provided voice roles in Italian cinema, notably the animated filmMomo in which he voiced the main antagonist, andGiulio Base 's religious dramaJudas' Gospel , where the title character serves as a narrator.[ 26]

Some of the gadgets he designed were used in the 1992 filmToys starringRobin Williams .[ 27] Giannini also collaborated withGabriella Greison on his memoirSono ancora un bambino which was published byLonganesi in 2014. A year later, he received thePremio Cesare Pavese .[ 28]
In 2012 he collaborated with Italian singerEros Ramazzotti in "Io sono te", from his albumNoi .
From 1967 until 1975, Giannini was married to actressLivia Giampalmo and they had two children. Their eldest son was Lorenzo, who died in 1987 from ananeurysm shortly before his 20th birthday.[ 29] Their second-born son is actorAdriano Giannini , who played his father's role in the2002 remake ofSwept Away .
Since 1983, he has been married to Eurilla del Bono and they have two sons, Emanuele and Francesco who are musicians.[ 30]
