Ghulam Rasool Santosh (1929 – March 10, 1997), also known asG. R. Santosh, was aKashmiri painter and poet. He was best known for histhemes inspired byKashmir Shaivism. In 1979, he became the recipient ofSahitya Akademi Award for his poem titledBe Soakh Rooh.[1]

Early life

He was born Ghulam Rasool in a KashmiriMuslim family of modest means in theChinkral Mohalla habba kadal neighborhood of oldSrinagar. He dropped out of school after his father's death and took up odd jobs likewriting,paintingsignboards, weavingsilk andwhitewashing walls. In 1954 he won ascholarship to studyfine arts under a celebratedIndian painter,N. S. Bendre in the faculty of Arts, atMaharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, in the state ofBaroda, in the state ofGujarat, in westernIndia.

Around the same time, he did what was considered unusual and unacceptable inconservative Kashmiri society - he married hischildhood sweetheart,Santosh, who was aKashmiri Pandit, and also assumed her name.[2]

Career

In the early 1960s,Santosh studiedTantric (mystical) art andKashmir Shaivism. In 1964 he adopted this style to create some of the best examples of modernTantric paintings. His paintings are known for the vibrancy of colors, neat lines,spiritual energy and sensuousness. His paintings have been exhibited in notable international shows including the TenthSão Paulo Art Biennial, 1969[3] and the 'Neo-Tantra: ContemporaryIndian Art Inspired by Tradition' exhibition atUniversity of California,Los Angeles, 1985.[4]

Death

He died on March 10, 1997, inNew Delhi,India. He was survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
