Gerstungen is amunicipality in theWartburgkreisdistrict ofThuringia,Germany. It is 42 kilometers southwest of thegeographic center of Germany, located inNiederdorla. In July 2018 the former municipalities ofMarksuhl andWolfsburg-Unkeroda were merged into Gerstungen.
Between 1945 and 1990,Gerstungen station served as East Germaninner German border crossing on theThuringian Railway. The crossing was open for trains travelling between theSoviet Zone of occupation in Germany (till 1949, thereafter the EastGerman Democratic Republic, orWest Berlin and the American zone of occupation (till 1949) and thereafter the West GermanFederal Republic of Germany. The traffic was subject to theInterzonal traffic regulations, that between West Germany and West Berlin followed the special regulations of theTransit Agreement (1972).
