
Gerhard Schwehm (born 13 March 1949,Ludwigshafen am Rhein,Germany) is Head of Solar System Science Operations Division for theEuropean Space Agency (ESA). He was Mission Manager for theRosetta mission until his retirement.
Schwehm gained hisPhD in AppliedPhysics from theRuhr University,Bochum, Germany.
Schwehm was a scientist at theEuropean Space Operations Centre (ESOC) modelling the dust environment forHalley's Comet. He then became ESA's firstplanetary scientist, working on theGiotto mission that provided the first close-up images of acomet nucleus, Halley's Comet.
Schwehm became lead scientist on ESA'sRosetta mission in 1985, that culminated inRosetta looping around theSun with comet67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014-2015.
Schwehm was mission manager for ESA'sSmart-1 mission that impacted theMoon in September 2006 ending three years surveying the Moon.
Schwehm is married with five children.[1]
