Gergovie (inauvergnatGergòia; until 1865Merdogne) is a French village in thecommune ofLa Roche-Blanche in thePuy-de-Dômedépartement, a few kilometres south ofClermont-Ferrand.
It is situated at the foot of theGergovie plateau, the official but disputed site of theBattle of Gergovia, where, near theArvernioppidum ofNemossos (a sacred wood, in Gaulish), the Arverni and other Gallic tribes gathered underVercingetorix's command to fight theRoman legions ofJulius Caesar in 52 BC.
The village was known asMerdogne until 1865, when it successfully petitioned EmperorNapoleon III to change the name to Gergovie because the site of the Gauls' victory over Caesar deserved a more glorious name than one that resembled a vulgarity (merde).[1]
