Exploration of geothermal wells in Taiwan began in 1976 byCPC Corporation. Since then, there have been 34 wells drilled.[2][3]
There are estimated several areas with highest potential for geothermal energy cultivation, which areHuadong Valley, Mount Lu,Tatun Volcanic Group andYilan Plain.[4]

Taiwan established its firstgeothermalpower plant in 1981. However, the plant was shut down in 1993 due to low efficiency.[5] The currently working geothermal power plant is theQingshui Geothermal Power Plant inDatong Township,Yilan County.
