Georges-Antoine-Pons Rayet (12 December 1839 – 14 June 1906) was a Frenchastronomer.[1]
He was born inBordeaux, France. He began working at theParis Observatory in 1863. He worked onmeteorology in addition toastronomy. He specialized in what was then the new field ofspectroscopy.
He was the founder and director of theBordeaux Observatory for more than 25 years until his death. He discoveredWolf–Rayet stars together withCharles Wolf in 1867. Awarded theJanssen Medal from the French Academy of Sciences in 1891.
