George Philip Nicholas Windsor, Earl of St Andrews (born 26 June 1962), is a British philanthropist, former diplomat and a member of the extendedBritish royal family. He was a member of theDiplomatic Service in New York and Budapest. St Andrews became chancellor of theUniversity of Bolton in 2017. He is the trustee of the Next Century Foundation and patron of theWelsh Sinfonia. He is the elder son ofPrince Edward, Duke of Kent, andKatharine, Duchess of Kent, and heir apparent to thedukedom of Kent. He is the second cousin ofKing Charles III and 43rd in the line ofsuccession to the British throne as of 2025.
George Philip Nicholas Windsor was born on 26 June 1962 atCoppins,Iver, Buckinghamshire, the eldest child ofPrince Edward, Duke of Kent, andKatharine, Duchess of Kent (née Worsley, a daughter ofSir William Worsley, 4th Baronet). Royal obstetricianSir John Peel assisted at his birth, at which time Lord St Andrews was 10thin line of succession to the throne.[1][2]
He was christened in the music room at Buckingham Palace on 14 September by theArchbishop of CanterburyMichael Ramsey. His godparents werePrince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; his auntPrincess Alexandra of Kent, his uncle OliverWorsley, and Lady Lily SerenaLumley (daughter of the11th Earl of Scarbrough).[3]
He was educated atEton College. He then studiedhistory atDowning College, Cambridge, where he earned anBachelor of Arts (BA) degree; as per tradition, his BA was promoted to aMaster of Arts (MA Cantab) degree.[4]
St Andrews served in theDiplomatic Service in New York and Budapest. He later worked in the antiquarian book business forChristie's auction house.[5] He has been a trustee of theSOS Children's Villages UK charity, as also a patron of Clifton Scientific Trust, an educational charity giving young people experience of the world of science and engineering. He is the longserving patron of theAssociation for International Cancer Research.[4]
In April 2012, he also became a trustee of the Next Century Foundation, a charity working throughout the Middle East.[4] Furthermore, he is a trustee of the Global eHealth Foundation and Patron of theWelsh Sinfonia.[4] On 30 March 2017, he was installed as chancellor of theUniversity of Bolton.[6]
On 9 January 1988, George marriedSylvana Tomaselli, a Canadian-born academic, at Leith Registration Office inEdinburgh at acivil ceremony.[7] The couple have three children:[8]
He is aFreemason. In 2024, he was installed asmaster of Royal Alpha Lodge 16. He was appointed Senior Grand Warden of theUnited Grand Lodge of England in April 2024.[9]
