George Davey SmithFRS (born 9 May 1959)[1] is a Britishepidemiologist. He has been professor of clinical epidemiology at theUniversity of Bristol since 1994,[1][2] honorary professor of public health at theUniversity of Glasgow since 1996, and visiting professor at theLondon School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine since 1999.[1][3]
He was also the scientific director of theAvon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children[4] (until replaced in 2017 byNic Timpson[5]) and a formereditor-in-chief of theInternational Journal of Epidemiology.[2]
Davey Smith attendedStockton Heath Primary School andLymm Grammar School inWarrington inNorth West England. He received aBA fromQueen's College, Oxford in 1981, anMB BChir fromJesus College, Cambridge in 1984, anMSc from theLondon School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1988, anMD from Jesus College, Cambridge in 1991,[6] and aDSc from Queen's College, Oxford in 2000.[1]
Davey Smith is anISI highly cited researcher,[2] a fellow of theRoyal Society of Edinburgh,[2] and a fellow of theAcademy of Medical Sciences, United Kingdom.[7] In 2019 Davey Smith became foreign member of theRoyal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.[8]
