
George Higginson Allsopp (28 March 1846 – 9 September 1907)[1] was an English brewer andConservative politician who sat in theHouse of Commons from 1885 to 1906.
Allsopp was born atBurton-on-Trent, the son ofHenry Allsopp, head of the brewery firm ofSamuel Allsopp & Sons and his wife Elizabeth Tongue. He was educated atEton andTrinity College, Cambridge[2] and entered the family brewery.[3] Between 1868 and 1871 he appeared in cricket matches for Worcestershire, although they did not qualify as first class.[4] Allsopp was aJ.P. andDeputy Lieutenant forStaffordshire[5] andDerbyshire. He was at one time chairman of the Burton-on-Trent School Board
Allsopp stood unsuccessfully for parliament atDroitwich in 1880. At the1885 general election, he was elected asMember of Parliament forWorcester. He held the seat until he retired from politics at the1906 election.[6]
Allsopp lived at Foston Hall, Derby and at 8, Hereford Gardens, Park Lane. He died at Salisbury at the age of 61.[7]
Allsopp married Mildred Georgiana Ashley-Cooper daughter ofAnthony Ashley-Cooper, 8th Earl of Shaftesbury, in 1895.[8] His brotherSamuel was also MP forTaunton, and his brothersHerbert andFrederic were also cricketers who played in first class games.
