Geoffrey Frederick Hewitt (3 January 1934 – 18 January 2019) was a Britishchemical engineer, andEmeritus Professor atImperial College London, where from 1993 to 1999 he was theCourtaulds Professor of chemical engineering.[1][2]
Hewitt attendedBoteler Grammar School,Warrington[1] and earned a BSc Tech in chemical engineering at theUniversity of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology followed by a PhD in the same in 1957. He worked for theUnited Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority until 1985 when he joined the Department of Chemical Engineering atImperial College London, being made Courtaulds Professor of chemical engineering in 1993 and Emeritus Professor in 1999 till his death.[3]
He died 18 January 2019.[3][4]
Hewitt received honorary degrees from theUniversity of Louvain (1988),[5] andHeriot Watt University (1995).[3][6] He was elected aFellow of theRoyal Academy of Engineering in 1984,[7] and became a Fellow of theRoyal Society in 1989,[4] In 2007 Professor Hewitt was awarded theGlobal Energy Prize byVladimir Putin.[8] He was President of theIChemE for 1989–1990 and received itsM. M. Sharma Medal for his contributions in 2017.[3]
