Genkō (元亨) was aJapanese era name (年号,nengō; "year name") afterGen'ō and beforeShōchū.[1] This period spanned the years from February 1321[2] to December 1324.[3] The reigning Emperor wasGo-Daigo-tennō (後醍醐天皇).[4]
The oldest extant account of Buddhism in Japan, theGenkō Shakusho (元亨釈書), was completed inGenkō 2, whence the era name in its title. The massive project was the work ofKokan Shiren.[7]
