Gen'ō (元応) was aJapanese era name (年号,nengō; "year name") afterBunpō and beforeGenkō. This period spanned the period from April 1319 through February 1321.[1] The reigning Emperor wasGo-Daigo-tennō (後醍醐天皇).[2]
After the abdication of Emperor Hanazono inBunpō 2, Takaharu-shinno was proclaimed emperor at the age of 31.Nijō Michihira waskampaku (chancellor); but the court remained under the direction of former-Emperor Go-Uda.Prince Morikuni was the shōgun inKamakura; and thedaimyō ofSagami,Hōjō Takatoki, wasshikken or chief minister of the shogunate.[3]
