Gaziura (Greek:Γαζίουρα), was a town inPontus, on the riverIris, near the point where its course turns northwards. Some scholars equate Gaziura withTalaura,[1] others withIbora,[2] and others with modernTurhal.[3]
It was the ancient residence of the kings of Pontus, but inStrabo's time it was deserted. (Strab. xii.)Dion Cassius (xxxv. 12) notices it as a place whereMithridates VI of Pontus took up his position against theRomanTriarius. (Comp.Pliny vi. 2.)
