Gauri Shah Rukh Khan[1][2] (néeChhibber; born 8 October 1970) is anIndianfilm producer andfashion designer who works inHindi films and the designing industry. She has produced films includingMain Hoon Na,Om Shanti Om,RaOne, andChennai Express under the production companyRed Chillies Entertainment that she co-founded in 2002 with her husband, actorShah Rukh Khan.
Khan is also aninterior designer who has designed spaces for high-profile individuals ,[3] among other celebrities.[4][5] In 2018, Gauri was named one ofFortune magazine's "50 Most Powerful Women".[6]
Gauri Chhibber was born in Delhi toPunjabi Hindu family of Savita andColonel Ramesh Chandra Chhibber who belong toHoshiarpur.[7] She was raised in the suburbs of Panchsheel Park, Delhi.[8] She completed her schooling atLoreto Convent School, completed high school at Modern School Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, and graduated fromLady Shri Ram College with aB.A. (Hons.) in history. She also completed a six-month course in fashion design from theNational Institute of Fashion Technology[3] and learned tailoring due to her father's garment business.[9]
In 2002, Gauri Khan and her husband Shah Rukh Khan established the film production and distribution companyRed Chillies Entertainment. It was transformed from the now defunct Dreamz Unlimited which the couple first established in 1999. She serves as co-chairperson and the main producer of all the films produced under the banner. The first film she produced wasFarah Khan's directorial debutMain Hoon Na. The film performed well at the box office, becoming the second highest-grossing film of the year. She also made a guest appearance in one of the films she has producedOm Shanti Om (2007).
She is managed by Bottomline Media, and close confidante and friend named Tanaaz Bhatia from NYC.[10] Khan also designed a fashion collection titled 'Cocktails and Dreams' forSatya Paul in 2016.[11]
Gauri first expressed interest in interior design as a hobby while renovating herBandra bungalow, Mannat at Siraj Dokadia Road.[12] The bungalow is a tourist spot and a heritage building deemed important to the townscape and hence exempt from demolition. However, in 2010, she professionally ventured into interior designing in partnership with interior designer and close friendSussanne Khan to design exclusive interior projects together.[13] The same year, they collaborated on their first commercial project together inVadodara.[13] In 2011, Gauri partnered with Sussanne again to launch and introduceThe Charcoal Project foundation in Mumbai.[14]
Gauri launched her first concept store calledThe Design Cell located inWorli, Mumbai in early 2014. The store showcases furniture designed by Gauri herself as well as various other Indian designers.[15] In 2016, Gauri was invited to show her designs at the prestigiousMaison et Objet show in Paris.[16]
In August 2017, Gauri launched her design studio, 'Gauri Khan Designs' that spans over {cvt|8,700|sqft}} inJuhu, Mumbai.[17] Khan has collaborated with various international artists includingRoberto Cavalli andRalph Lauren for home accessories.[18] In a 2017 interview withVogue India, she spoke about her project, and said "It’s been an exciting experience, seeing it all come together. I’ve been influenced by my travels across India and the globe. I take a keen interest in the architecture of places when I travel."[19] For her work in the field of interior design, Gauri was awarded with the Excellence in Design Award at the Hello! Hall of Fame Awards in 2018.[20]
In 2017, Gauri Khan curated a collection of designer lights for TISVA, a premium home decorative lighting brand from Usha International Limited which introduced smart-control magnetic systems—launched for the first time in India.[21]
Gauri Khan is known for keeping a low profile and being media shy, though she is often cited as one of the most stylish women in Bollywood.[22] She appeared on the cover of page of the popular Indian lifestyle magazine,Vogue India in January 2008. The photos were taken by the well-known British lifestyle photographerChris Craymer. The magazine called her the "First Lady of Bollywood".[23] She appeared again on the cover page ofVogue India along with Sussanne Khan inApril 2012. She also walked the ramp alongside her husband for filmmaker turned fashion designerKaran Johar at the HDIL India Couture Week 2009.[24]
In 2008, she appeared in a television and print commercial for the home furnishings brand, D'decor along with her husband. The couple play themselves in the commercial.[25]
Gauri first metShah Rukh Khan in 1984 inDelhi, before the start of his successful career inBollywood.[26] The couple married on 25 October 1991, in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony.[27]
They have a sonAryan (born 1997) and a daughterSuhana (born 2000). In 2013, they became parents of a third child, a son named AbRam, who was born through a surrogate mother.[28] According to Shah Rukh Khan, while he believes in the religion ofIslam, he respects his wife'sreligion greatly. Their children follow both religions; at home theQur'an is situated next to theHindu deities.[29]
