Gary Gianni (born 1954) is anAmericancomics artist best known for his eight years illustrating the syndicated newspaper comicPrince Valiant.

After Gianni graduated from theChicago Academy of Fine Arts in 1976, he worked for theChicago Tribune as anillustrator and network television news as acourtroom sketch artist.

Career

He illustrated numerous magazines, children's books and paperbacks. His comic book debut was in 1990 with adaptations ofThe Tales ofO. Henry and20,000 Leagues Under the Sea for theClassics Illustrated series. He went on to work forDark Horse Comics, where he contributed toIndiana Jones and the Shrine of the Sea Devil andThe Shadow. AfterJohn Cullen Murphy retired fromPrince Valiant in 2004, Gianni began drawing the strip, continuing until March 25, 2012, whenThomas Yeates became the strip's illustrator on April 1, 2012.

As an illustrator he illustrated Wandering Star Press'sSavage Tales ofSolomon Kane (1998) andBran Mak Morn: The Last King (2001) byRobert E. Howard,Gentlemen of the Road byMichael Chabon (2007), andA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a prequel toGeorge R.R. Martin'sA Song of Ice and Fire series.

Awards

Gianni won the 1997 Best Short StoryEisner Award for his collaborating withArchie Goodwin onHeroes inDC Comics'Batman: Black & White.[citation needed]
