Galway West is aparliamentary constituency represented inDáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament orOireachtas. The constituency elects five deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) on theelectoral system ofproportional representation by means of thesingle transferable vote (PR-STV).

History and boundaries

The constituency was created under theElectoral (Revision of Constituencies) Act 1935 and first used at the1937 general election, when the formerGalway constituency was split intoGalway East and Galway West.

It currently spans the western half ofCounty Galway, taking inGalway city, the GalwayGaeltacht, andClifden, as well as part of southernCounty Mayo.[1]

The Constituency Review Report 2023 of theElectoral Commission recommended that at thenext general election, the portion of the constituency inCounty Mayo be transferred to the constituency ofMayo.[2]

TheElectoral (Amendment) Act 2023 defines the constituency as:[3]
