Taxonomy

[edit]

The genusGalloperdix was introduced in 1845 by the English zoologistEdward Blyth to accommodate a single species, thered spurfowl, which is therefore thetype species.[2][3][4] The genus name combines the Latin wordgallus for a "farmyard cock" withperdix meaning "partridge".[5]

The genusGalloperdix issister to the genusPolyplectron[6] and together they form a clade that is sister toHaematortyx.[7][8]

The genus contains three species:[1]
