Galloperdix is agenus of threespecies of bird in the pheasant family,Phasianidae. Theseterrestrial birds are restricted to theIndian subcontinent, with thered spurfowl andpainted spurfowl in forest and scrub in India, and theSri Lanka spurfowl in forests of Sri Lanka. They share the common name "spurfowl" with the members of the genusPternistis which are widely distributed in Africa.[1]
The genusGalloperdix was introduced in 1845 by the English zoologistEdward Blyth to accommodate a single species, thered spurfowl, which is therefore thetype species.[2][3][4] The genus name combines the Latin wordgallus for a "farmyard cock" withperdix meaning "partridge".[5]
The genusGalloperdix issister to the genusPolyplectron[6] and together they form a clade that is sister toHaematortyx.[7][8]
