Gaius Sempronius Blaesus was a Roman statesman and general during the middle era of theRoman Republic. He was one of the twoconsuls of253 BCE, serving withGnaeus Servilius Caepio. He was consul during theFirst Punic War againstCarthage. During his consulship Blaesus led a Roman fleet to Africa andpillaged theLibyo-phoenician coast all the way to the island ofMenix before sailing back toItaly viaPanormus onSicily. On his way back to Italy his fleet was hit by a violent storm sinking 150 ships.[1]
Despite the disaster at sea Blaesus was awarded aTriumph for his African campaign.[2]
