Guanine nucleotide-binding protein subunit alpha-13 is aprotein that in humans is encoded by theGNA13gene.[5][6]

Interactions and functions

[edit]

The GNA13 gene encodes the G13G protein alpha subunit. Together withGNA12, these two proteins comprise one of the four classes ofheterotrimeric G protein alpha subunits.[7] Heterotrimeric G proteins function in transducinghormone andneurotransmitter signals detected by cell surfaceG protein-coupled receptors tointracellular signaling pathways to modulate cell functions. G protein alpha subunits bind to guanine nucleotides and function in a regulatory cycle, and are active when bound toGTP but inactive and associated with theG beta-gamma complex when bound toGDP.[8][9]

Active GTP-bound G12 alpha subunitinteracts with and activatesARHGEF1,[10][11][12]ARHGEF11,[13][14] andARHGEF12.[15][16] These ARHGEF proteins function asguanine nucleotide exchange factors for theRhosmall GTPases to regulate theactincytoskeleton.[17]

GNA13 has been shown tointeract withAKAP3,[18]RIC8A,[19][20] andRadixin.[21]

Clinical significance

[edit]

Recurrent mutations in this gene have been associated to cases ofdiffuse large B-cell lymphoma.[22][23]
