Funza (Spanish pronunciation:[ˈfunsa]) is a municipality and town ofColombia in theWestern Savanna Province, of thedepartment ofCundinamarca. Funza is situated on theBogotá savanna, the southwestern part of theAltiplano Cundiboyacense with the urban centre at an altitude of 2,548 metres (8,360 ft). In Funza theLa Florida wetland, part of thewetlands of Bogotá, a remnant of thePleistoceneLake Humboldt, still exists. The town is part of theMetropolitan Area of Bogotá and bordersMadrid andTenjo in the north,Mosquera in the south, Madrid in the west andCota and the localityEngativá of the capitalBogotá in the east. The eastern boundary is formed by theBogotá River. Funza is the site of the former main settlementBacatá of theMuisca Confederation. Modern Funza was founded byGonzalo Jiménez de Quesada during theSpanish conquest of the Muisca on April 20, 1537.[2]
The name Funza comes fromChibcha and means "Powerful lord".[2]
In the times before theSpanish conquest, Funza was an important village in theMuisca Confederation. This loose confederation ofrulers of theMuisca had a southern ruler, thezipa based inBacatá, the present-day municipality of Funza.[2]
Modern Funza was founded byconquistadorGonzalo Jiménez de Quesada en route in his search forEl Dorado on April 20, 1537.[2]
On January 21, 1972, aLíneas Aéreas La Urraca flightcrashed in Funza after an explosion on board.[3]
The economy of Funza is based on agricultural and industrial activities. Main agricultural products arepotatoes andmaize. Other industries involve plastics and metalcraft production.[2]
